Heimdalen

Fifty square kilometres of mountain in eastern Jotunheimen. It was in the family until 1952, and has been public land ever since.

The valley

Heimdalen lies between Øystre Slidre and Vågå, in the eastern reaches of Jotunheimen - high mountain pasture and two lakes, set at just over 1,000 metres.

In 1952 it was given to the state and made into a nature reserve, in keeping with the family's belief that nature should be open to everyone. Tourists now use its open cabins, and researchers study the mountain fish population in the lake.
