About us
Why the foundation exists
The Elise Foundation was established in memory of Lise Stigen, a Norwegian artist whose life and work continue to shape the people closest to her. After her recent passing, the foundation was created as a way to carry her values forward.
Lise's artistic legacy
Lise was a painter. She studied and worked as a young artist in Paris, and her practice was shaped throughout her life by the Norwegian landscape. Her paintings drew on the natural palette of Norway and returned often to themes from the natural world.
Europe, with Norwegian roots
The foundation is European in reach and Norwegian at heart. Its early work is being led by Lise's granddaughter, Veronica Hvaal Stigen, currently based in Paris. The foundation's activity will move between France, the Netherlands, Norway and beyond as it grows.
Who we will support
We are deliberately keeping the first programme open as we listen and learn. It may take the form of support for visual artists, musicians, young women at the start of a creative path, or makers working close to the natural world.
Nature, as inheritance
Our family has a long history of nature conservation in Norway. While conservation is not yet a formal programme of the foundation, it is part of how we think and who we are, and it may shape future work.
In formation
The foundation is currently being formed. Our founding board is being finalised and we are preparing for a formal launch. Enquiries from prospective board members, donors, and partners are warmly welcomed.
